Sclerograph

Sclerograph | For the measurement of the hardness of steel in a hardness range of 200–850 HVR

During the measuring process, the Sclerograph is placed perpendicularly against the finely ground surface to be measured on the sample and the drop rod pulled up at the knurled head until the catch engages. In this way a constant drop height is always ensured. The catch is released by gently pressing the release lever. The drop rod falls onto the surface of the sample and then rebounds to a certain height depending on the hardness of the surface.

At the reversing point it is held by a special mechanism that makes it significantly easier to read the rebound height at the upper collar on the drop hammer. To reduce scatter to a minimum, several measurements are to be made on a sample and the average of the results formed. Here it is to be ensured that each measurement is slightly offset to prevent errors that could be caused by the hardening of the material. The average values found in this manner are converted into Vickers hardness HVR using the reference graph provided.

Purpose

The device is used for the quick, portable measurement of the hardness of steel in a hardness range of around 200–850 HVR. It features in particular a robust, small design and as a result is ideally suited for use as a portable tester.
